Tying shoelaces is a daunting task for a child. While making up tunes about bunny ears and walking around trees, parents do all they can to expedite the learning curve, but their patience is tried nonetheless.
Why do you tie your shoes? You probably don’t think much about this mundane and menial task anymore, but be simple with me for a moment. You tie your shoes for a secure fit and assurance that no “little bunnies” will try to trip you, right?
But why do you wear shoes? (Feel like your back in elementary school yet?) You could just walk around bear-footed, you know. So why don’t you? Because it’s a rough world out there, and those little piggies need protection from the elements. Your shoes shield your feet so you can get where you are going and not have to consider every step.
So, I want you to put on your shoes. No, not the ones in your closet or under your bed, but the ones that Christ has given you. These shoes are the most valuable pair you will ever have, for they serve you the greatest privilege of all: walking with Christ.
Enoch was a man of little mention but a man who knew how to tie his shoes. He welcomed the presence of God in each step of the journey. Genesis 5:22 and 24 say that “Enoch walked with God…”
Enoch was a preacher of righteousness and a prophet who began his ministry at the birth of his son Methusalah. I’m sure you have heard of him. Methuselah was the oldest man to ever live and the grandfather of Noah. When Methuselah died, judgment fell on the entire human race as God destroyed the world by a flood. But what does that have to do with Enoch’s walking with God?
If it weren’t for Enoch’s walk with the Lord, a righteous heritage may have never been passed down to Noah and his family, leaving an entire world at enmity with God. One man’s decision to make every step count for the Lord redeemed an entire race from extinction.
We don’t think much about our steps from day to day, but we must remember that there is a world counting on our walk with Christ! Enoch pleased God (Hebrews 11:5-6) by his faith-filled walk and eventually took his final step into the presence of Jehovah, skipping death entirely. Every step along the way was made in utter submission and given to the Father’s business.
Where are you going in your journey with Christ? What are the steps that lie before you? Put on your walking shoes and tie them tightly. Submit your destiny to the One Who knows the way, to the One Who is THE WAY! There’s a generation depending on you.
